Military? Considering Expat Jobs? Take this Moving Overseas Checklist to Heart

If you have a military background and have been offered the job or promotion of your dreams but have learned that it is in an entirely different country, you may feel a bit intimidated at first.  The prospect of pulling up stakes and heading out to parts unknown can be unnerving to anyone. However, if you've decided that you can't let this chance pass you by and have to move overseas, you should be aware that proper planning and preparation are needed.  Follow this moving overseas checklist and make sure these travel must haves are taken care of before moving day:

Passports, Visas, Permits

First and foremost you need to be sure that your required travel documents are up to date and in order.  Find out exactly what the country you are moving to expects in terms of identification and documentation from you and your family. Your passports must be current. Normally when a job offer is made to a non-national, a work permit is issued.  Be sure you are in possession of this document. Contact a consulate or find out what the immigration requirements are by going online to get the information.

Medical Matters

In some cases, newcomers to a particular country are required to provide proof of health and immunizations. Before you leave your home country, find out what all the requirements are and visit your family doctor to get the appropriate paperwork. Be sure to get all the recommended vaccines. It's also a good idea to get any prescription medications that you take regularly refilled, and ask your doctor to provide details about them so that you can present them to your new docto in your new country.

Downsizing, Packing and Shipping

When you ship your belongings overseas, it can take up to a month to receive them, so it's a good idea to set out any items that you will need during your first month and pack them in your luggage.  This may be a good time to have a yard sale to eliminate excess belongings requiring packing and shipping, especially if you're personally paying for the moving bill.  If your company is paying for your moving expenses, you may be a little less concerned about downsizing. Choose a shipping company that comes with references and has an excellent reputation; you should get quotes from a few companies before making a final decision.

Secure Housing

Whether you are renting or buying, you'll need to have your new living arrangements made before you leave in order to avoid lengthy hotel stays.  Go online and find websites for well-known real estate companies and contact them about properties that interest you. Unless you are set on seeing the property in person, getting a place secured before you leave will make it easier for you once you get there.

Pets

If you have live animals that you want to bring with you, find out what the regulations are for them entering your new country. They will likely need proof of vaccination, and sometimes there's a fee to be paid. You will need to arrange for their transport as well. Most airlines will do this for a set price.
