The Revolutionary Biograpy of Emilio Aguinaldo

Many of you have heard of the Philippines; whether through a passing remark or through a desire to visit the beautiful country. However how many know anything of the revolution that happened to gain its independence? Or even who stood out as the main revolutionary leader for the people? That man was Emilio Aguinaldo; a Philippine general and politician who helped shaped the life of his country. Here is his biography.

Family

Aguinaldo was born to Carlos Aguinaldo y Jamir and Trinidad Famy y Valero. He was from a large family and he enjoyed a relatively comfortable life due to his father’s prominent position as well as his ethnic background. He received some of his education from his family and was a devoted son to his mother.

Rise to Power

Later on, due to the passing of new laws, Aguinaldo was elected town head because of his popularity. It was not until over a decade later that he became become intrinsic to Philippine politics though. The Philippines were under Spanish colonial rule and a secret organization, Katipunan, arose to fight for freedom. Aguinaldo joined the secret sect and became influential in giving them victories over the Spanish.

Katipunan Conflicts

Bonifacio, the leader of the Katipunan, lost his prominence within his group as his rebels had their own disagreements. There was a call for a revolutionary government in place of the Katipunan and Bonifacio lost the elections to none other than Aguinaldo. Bonifacio refused to acquiesce to this new government and tried to reassert his power by accusing Aguinaldo of treason. However Aguinaldo’s men turned the tables and accused Bonifacio of treason and sentenced him to death, though the death sentence was later revoked.

Retreat and Reassembly of Forces

Aguinaldo lost ground to the Spanish and retreated. Soon afterwards a pact was signed to end all altercations and Aguinaldo left for Hong Kong. While in exile Aguinaldo reorganized his forces and at the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, Aguinaldo sided with the Americans, returned to his country and resumed battle against the Spanish. Aguinaldo soon captured all Spanish held territories with the exception of Manila and therefore declared independence.

Presidency

Aguinaldo then became the first president of the Philippines at a very early age. He was only 29 at the beginning of his reign and he managed to be longest lived president as well, passing away at 94.

Here ends the biography of Emilio Aguinaldo.
